It was a beautiful little wood
With stately oaks, tall magnolias,
Sycamores and lofty pines.
I would go there every time I could.
Honeysuckle and jasmine vines
Entwined
Around the lower branches,
Where deer, rabbits and raccoons
Took their chances.
Shady, leaf lined paths so good for
Walking,
There were mocking birds, sparrows,
Woodpeckers and chickadees.
And a bobcat surreptitiously stalking.
Spring and rain brought wildflowers
With honey bees stealing the nectar.
I still walked there with an eye on the
Clouds;
Intent on dodging the showers.
One mild summers day as I approached
I heard a sound like thunder.
It was steady and loud and continued to
Rumble.
It reached such a pitch that it made me
Wonder.
When I saw what it was it caused a pain
In my heart.
A bulldozer was crushing the trees and
Trampling the vines.
I looked for the sign and saw what it said:
In two foot letters it read: COMING SOON
ANOTHER WALMART.
